T his is a story about Roy the Skunk. The other day, Roy was looking at his email inbox and feeling badly about himself. There were lots of emails that he hadn’t sifted through. Hours and hours worth of emails. It made him exhausted just thinking about the effort that it would take to get that inbox back to zero. Then, to make matters worse, there were a few select emails that he had yet to respond to – emails that he was anxious to send for one reason or another, the kind that he should have written right away but didn’t…and then a week passed and then a month. Pretty soon, it just felt ridiculous to respond to these emails in such a tardy manner – but it was also ridiculous to continue putting them off. Roy started to berate himself in the way that skunks sometimes do…

Later in the afternoon, Roy went on a jog and was listening to his favorite podcast, Reply All. As he soaked in the humor and insights of the two hosts, his ears perked up when they started talking about a brand new holiday they had invented: Email Debt Forgiveness Day. Slated for April 30th, this holiday promised to be the answer to all of Roy’s email anxieties. Here was the simple (genius) premise: “If there’s an email response you’ve wanted to send but been too anxious to send, you can send it on April 30th, without any apologies or explanations for all the time that has lapsed.” The podcast went on, “It doesn’t matter how long it’s been. Just include a link to this explainer, the one you’re reading right now, so that your recipient knows what’s going on.”

It was as if the sun had broken through the clouds and a voice had come from the heavens. Roy started to dance.

Here’s the joyous news: this holiday is not just for skunks. It’s for you and me, too. Hallelujah, right?!?!

Any movement that gives us a little more freedom, releases some pressure from being in the rat race, allows us to look at our quirky anxieties and treat them with a dose of grace – that is a movement I’m ALL ABOUT.

Tomorrow’s the day, folks. If you have an email (or 5 or 10) that fit within these parameters, then join myself and Roy the Skunk in finally replying to them – shame free! The dance party will resume in the woods after the emails have been sent.

Reply All, I’m your biggest fan! Thanks for coming up with such an amazing holiday!
